Intimate Micro Wedding in Trout Lake, Washington

MaKenna and Alex share a big thing in common, besides their last name, both were standout athletes at the Division I University of Minnesota. Alex played baseball for the Gophers and continued his career on to the minor leagues. His bride, MaKenna, was a four-year starter for the Gopher’s softball team garnering All American accolades. Two incredibly talented individuals, but more important than that, two incredibly great people.

MaKenna holds a special place in my heart. Growing up, she was the little sister I never had. We spent countless summer days at the ballpark, and eventually I watched this stud continue to impact softball programs, but also our community. It’s no surprise that MaKenna possesses a heart of gold. But throughout the wedding planning process, I quickly learned that Alex does too. The Boxwell wedding was anticipated for the Summer of 2023 in Wisconsin. But by surprise, I received a call from MaKenna. They were no longer planning a wedding. THEY WERE PLANNING A MICRO WEDDING! Here’s the twist: rather than having a little over a year to plan, the clock was ticking - we now had 55 days.

MaKenna and Alex envisioned a simple, intimate gathering of their closest family and friends to celebrate their love and commitment to each other. And to no surprise, that is exactly what they did. They rented a secluded VRBO in rural Trout Lake, Washington. When I say rural, there wasn’t another car in passing; cows escaping the fenced pastures; and roosters crowing upon our arrival. Nothing could top off the early morning drive along the bends of the Columbia River Gorge. The sunrise glistening on the choppy Columbia River and the blue skies and sunshine gleaming around Mount Adams - a breath-taking backdrop everyone needs in their wedding photos - are some of the most calming moments I’ve ever experienced.

The property exceeded all expectations for a venue. The house itself slept 20+ people split between three levels and provided the perfect set-up for the bridal party to stay and get ready. A small river flowing through the property, provided the perfect ambiance for MaKenna and Alex to write their vows. But why stop there? The groomsmen took the opportunity to polar plunge into the cold, rushing water after a morning of watching the MLB Wildcard series and challenging each other to some intense rounds of Mario Kart. Later that afternoon, Alex stood amongst the pine trees awaiting MaKenna’s tap on his shoulder for their private moment. Pure smiles and joy filled their faces as they exchanged their vows and first look. A perfect and intimate start to their Micro Wedding.

Aisles lined with pampas grass, a beautiful A-frame backdrop dressed with greenery and florals, and two wine barrels at the ceremony entrance. Alex was joined by his best friend as the officiant, while no one could have predicted another best friend  owning the title of “The Beer Guy”, doing what he does best (handing out beers) to the song of “London Bridge” by Fergie.

After the knot was tied, guests wasted no time grabbing drinks and incredible charcuterie cups made by Charcuterie Tre (MaKenna’s sister) followed by a Hawaiian dinner, topped off with a donut wall for dessert. “Get in the car loser, we’re going to take sunset pics,” said Regina George, probably. We did not waste the perfect opportunity to drive the bride and groom up the road to capture gorgeous Pacific Northwest sunset photos with the stunning Mount Adams in the background. Not sure who was more beautiful, the bride or the mountain. JUST KIDDING - we all know the answer. Mount Adams. Gotcha again! Makenna, of course. I mentioned MaKenna is basically my little sister, right?

We arrived back at the venue, greeted with love by family and friends. But it was time to get the party started and celebrate the commitment of love made earlier that evening. The men of the family put together the dance floor and as the night grew on, so did the laughter. We ended the night with a gorgeous sparkler exit before MaKenna stunned the guests by changing into her “Mrs. Boxwell” sweat outfit that  she handmade. Let’s not forget hers and his matching Chuck Taylors. The little details, intimate moments, and overflowing love between and for this couple made the trip to the Pacific Northwest so worth it. My heart is so full and I’m incredibly blessed to be asked to photograph this wedding.

Congratulations, MaKenna and Alex, on the most perfect day surrounded by your loved ones!
